Former SEC Associate General Counsel Benjamin Schiffrin Joins Better Markets as Director of Securities Policy

Washington, D.C.  –  Dennis Kelleher, Co-Founder, President and CEO of Better Markets, announced today that Benjamin Schiffrin, who most recently served as Associate General Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has joined Better Markets as Director of Securities Policy.

“As the SEC fulfills its mission and mandate to protect investors and ensure that the US capital markets are well-regulated and remain the envy of the world, we welcome Ben to the team as our Director of Securities Policy. Ben has the experience, knowledge, and skills to impact all the key issues related to investors, markets, and capital formation, which are necessary for a financial system that supports the productive economy, jobs, and broad-based prosperity,” said Kelleher. “Ben’s record of accomplishment and passion for public service will help Better Markets fulfill its mission and mandate to protect and promote the public interest throughout the financial and economic policymaking process.”

“I have spent my entire career trying to promote fairness in the securities markets, and I am passionate about the need to ensure that securities regulation protects investors and markets while promoting worthwhile capital formation,” said Schiffrin. “For more than a decade, Better Markets has been a leader on economic and financial policies that are crucial to the capital markets, Main Street families, workers, investors, and consumers. I’m proud to join a team that has a proven track record of getting results and improving our financial system.”

Schiffrin spent 18 years at the SEC, serving in numerous positions. As Associate General Counsel from 2016 to 2022, Schiffrin advised the Commissioners and oversaw the Commission’s administrative adjudications program, including the drafting of adjudicatory opinions and orders on behalf of the Commission.  Schiffrin also provided counsel to the Commission on rules promulgated by both the Commission and the self-regulatory organizations such as FINRA.

From 2008 to 2016, Schiffrin served as an appellate litigator in the Office of the General Counsel at the SEC, where he prepared briefs and presented oral arguments on behalf of the Commission before the United States Courts of Appeals.  Schiffrin also assisted the Solicitor General’s office in preparing briefs as amicus curiae before the United States Supreme Court. Schiffrin holds a law degree from Harvard Law School, and graduated summa cum laude with a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University.
