Better Markets announced today that it has hired the Chief Economist for the Senate Banking Committee, Marc Jarsulic, as its Chief Economist, strengthening the public interest group’s expertise in banking issues as well as oversight of the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve.
Dr. Jarsulic served until a week ago as Chief Economist for the Senate Banking Committee, where he played a key role in drafting the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
“Marc brings unparalleled experience and skills to Better Markets. He will focus on banking issues at Treasury, the Fed and the banking agencies generally,” said Dennis Kelleher, president and CEO of Better Markets.
He previously served as Deputy Staff Director and Chief Economist for the congressional Joint Economic Committee, where he led a team that undertook one of the first studies of the subprime mortgage crisis prior to the 2008 financial meltdown. He was senior risk advisor in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Risk Assessment and practiced antitrust law at the Federal Trade Commission and in private practice. Dr. Jarsulic was a tenured economics professor at the University of Notre Dame. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
Dr. Jarsulic’s publications include “Anatomy of a Financial Crisis: A Real Estate Bubble, Runaway Credit Markets, and Regulatory Failure” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010).
