Speculation in Commodity Markets

CFTC Chief Economist Andrei Kirilenko convened a conference last Thursday and Friday in Washington, DC, to discuss commodity markets.  Here’s the Agenda.

The papers are supposed to be available on the CFTC website shortly, but FT has an interesting article based on one of the key presentations today entitled “Conventional Wisdom on Speculators is Challenged.”

Stanford Professor Ken Singleton’s presentation is the focus, but the article also quotes Mike Masters at the end.  Interestingly, while Mike didn’t make a presentation at the conference, he was nonetheless the center of attention due to Professor Scott Irwin’s presentation entitled “Testing the Masters Hypothesis in Commodity Futures Markets.”

Check out the article and the presentations on the CFTC website for a lively and diverse discussion of commodity markets.
